Time For A Change

While I found the April A-to-Z Challenge challenging (and fun), I’m glad it’s over. Even though I wrote my own posts (it’s true!), I feel somewhat free…no guidelines in which to write under. Will I participate next year? Dunno. Ask me on March 31, 2014.

So, now what do I write? I have no freaking idea. Well, I do and I have some posts to catch up on, posts that were put off during the month of April, but today it feels as if my brain is fried.

I was handed two awards from two wonderful bloggers that I need to respond to and answer questions that were put on my plate — a chance to learn more things about me. Trust me, there’s not much more to learn. I will do that in the next few days.

Also on the horizon, I was contacted by Purina to see if I would do a few “sponsored” posts. They offered to fly me to St. Louis and attend a conference on, “how to interact with your cat.” My response? I don’t interact with my cat without his permission. Instead, he interacts with me when he deems it important. Usually when I’m trying to write.

Anyway, I couldn’t attend, but they still asked if I would participate, provided they mailed the materials to me. I agreed. I wasn’t technically paid in cash, instead, received a few awesome freebies that I’m to use with Jasper, etc., and then I’m to do a post once a week for weeks to note his progress. Needless to say, Jasper thought Santa had visited yet again and has been thrilled with the freebies. He can’t wait to be a star on my blog. He really needs his own Facebook page, but don’t worry…I’m not going there.

Things have been rather quiet on the blog lately, and as a natural worry wart, I…well, I worry. Traffic has been down, but I choose to attribute that to that fact that spring that has finally sprung for those of you up north (Note: It’s practically summer in Texas…seriously, the air conditioner is on). So I’m assuming that people have chosen to spend time outside, rather than bundled up in front of their computer, wondering what wonderful, insightful things are going to spew from my mouth.

While my intention was to try and monetize my blog some how, some way, it’s been very slow going and quite frustrating. Finding a job has been next to impossible and while I’m still toiling away, sending out resumes, answering ads, etc., it’s falling on deaf ears. That’s why I thought by monetizing this blog, I would in essence, have created a job for myself. Fail. You can’t succeed without traffic. I can’t attract traffic unless I have something useful to say, something people will want to share. Because of this, I’ve been thinking of ways to do just that, but not quite sure of what route to take. I do know that humor will only take you so far. That’s not to say that I cannot apply humor to my posts, but they need to be more useful.

Maybe it’s time for a change, yes?

Mommy bloggers seem to do really well, but I don’t have children. Well, my animals are my children, but they are of the four-legged variety, not the two-legged, shitting in diapers variety. (Thank goodness).  I guess I could market myself under that context. Might be a cute selling point. I might be delusional as well.

So, let’s change things a bit. I’m going to need your help. I want this blog to attract readers. I want my readers to kick off their shoes and stay a while. As it stands now, I think my blog could use an overhaul. The only thing I cannot change is my URL address. Everything else can go.

Y’all are creative people! How about a little help? Post your ideas. If you don’t want to post them in the comments, then send me an email to gkadams(at)funnylifestories(dot)com. Don’t be afraid to be critical. I have thick skin. All I ask is for honesty.

I’m looking forward to hearing from y’all! And don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter (which comes out today)! See sign up form below.

There’s too many mommy blogs out there and frankly I’m sick of them. I like your blog the way it is. If you try to please everyone you please no one! Be true to yourself and write what you like to read.

    • GKAdams

Appreciate it, Deb. I’ll just keep on keepin’ on.

What does Billy say? Oh yeah ‘Don’t go changing to try and please me….’ Be who you are and you’ll go far… OMG did I just mix Billy Joel and Dr Seuss? It’s ok I’ll show myself the door.
Thanks for hooking up at the hump day hook up anyway…. leaving now… popping head around the door to see if you’re still watching…..

      Billy Seuss? Is that you?

  • Paula @ Vintage Kitchen

It seems many of us are in the middle of big changes. Will send you an email with whatever suggestion I think might help.

      Thanks, Paula.

Do not do a mommy or fashion or nail polish/makeup blog. Way too many of them. Stick with what you are doing. The newsletter will also help your traffic. You do seem to have ads on your blog so that is a start.

    • GKAdams

Those ads are just affiliates. I don’t make any money unless someone buys something from them, and even then, it’s mere pennies.

Seriously Gina I just don’t know (I’m so burned-out). What are your hobbies and passions? And don’t say ‘writing’ ’cause that’s what’s getting in the way of living a life worth writing ABOUT- right? I’m also sick of the Mommy Blogs, even though that’s who mostly reads me. I’m a mommy- but they’re all grown up. What to do… what to do….

Not sure… I do know there are too many mommy blogs out there. I like your style… and in the long run, doing what’s true to yourself feels right.
